мillio𝚗s of Americans are anticipated to take a day off on the Monday following the Sᴜper Bowl, referred to as ‘Sᴜper Sick Monday,’ as record-breɑking viewership is expected for the ‘Taylor Bowl.’ According to predictions by the UKG Workforce Institute, approximately 16.1 million employees are forecasted to experience the infamous ‘Sᴜper Bowl Flu’ in the aftermath of Sᴜper Bowl LVIII.
The phenomenon of ‘Sᴜper Sick Monday’ has gained such prevalence that there are ongoing petitions and legislative initiatives aiming to designate it as an official holiday. This year has seen a surge in demand for time off, with around 10 million employees already submitting requests for the day after Sᴜper Bowl Sunday.
The anticipated increase in viewership, influenced in part by Taylor Swift’s presence, is significant, with a Seton Hall poll suggesting that 21 percent of viewers are swayed by her participation. Additionally, UKG reports that approximately 6.4 million employees plan to be late for work on that day.
According to the survey, 11.2 million employees are uncertain about taking the day off, and 6.4 million will decide at the last minute. Shockingly, nearly 15 million adults admit to falsely claiming illness the day after the Sᴜper Bowl, including 11 percent in managerial positions. Moreover, 6 million individuals have risked workplace penalties due to unannounced absences in the past.
Chris Todd, the CEO of UKG, underscores the importance of recognizing major cultural events as opportunities to foster unity and acknowledge life beyond the workplace. Speaking to Axios, Todd emphasizes that leaders should recognize that people have lives outside of work during such events.
Taylor Swift, involved in a relationship with Kelce since September 2023, is expected to be present at Allegiant Stadium for the Sᴜper Bowl kickoff, contributing to the significant rise in NFL viewership, particularly among female audiences. Swift’s presence has reportedly generated around $332 million for the NFL.
Despite being one of the most popular days for calling out sick, it’s noted that August 24 surpasses Sᴜper Bowl Monday in sick leave instances. Stomach bugs are identified as the most common reason for sick leave among U.S. workers, constituting 54 percent of sick leave cases. The reasons behind the designation of August 24 as a preferred sick day remain unclear, as no major holidays are associated with that week.
