After grappling with ticket scams, scalpers, and website glitches, Swifties are now facing challenges from Airbnb hosts taking advantage of Taylor Swift’s tour in Sydney and Melbourne.
Despite booking accommodations months in advance for the pop star’s Eras tour, numerous fans have had their reservations canceled at the last minute by Airbnb hosts who then relist the same spaces at significantly higher prices, as reported by The Sydney Morning Herald.
One fan from Gunnedah, NSW, secured accommodation near the MCG between February 16 and 20 for $630, only for the host to cancel a week before the show, citing the need to ‘redo the carpets.’ Two days later, the host relisted the same property for $1,347, charging $717 more than the original booking.
Frustrated by the blatant price gouging, the Swiftie confronted the host, who simply responded, ‘I don’t know why it’s relisted.’ This left the fan scrambling to secure another room just days before her flight to Melbourne.
Similar incidents of sᴜdden price hikes by Airbnb hosts have been reported, with cancellations attributed to reasons such as ‘family issues’ or ‘plumbing problems,’ only to be relisted days later at significantly higher prices.
Airbnb has a host cancellation policy that ‘may impose fees and other consequences, such as blocking a host from relisting on the same dates that were canceled,’ according to a spokesperson. The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission emphasized that hosts cannot mislead consumers about cancellation reasons and may be required to compensate for foreseeable losses caused by the cancellation.
Given the substantial costs associated with tour tickets, flights, and other expenses, some Swifties could face significant financial losses if unable to secure alternative accommodations after having their Airbnb bookings canceled.
