According to Lil Wayne, at the age of 14, his mother requested him for a grandchild.
Lil Wayne delivered a moving speech after collecting the Global Impact Award from the Black Music Collective at the Recording Academy Honors on Thursday, February 2. Lil Wayne praised God, the Recording Academy, and other music industry professionals for the accolade before crying about his mother, Jacida Carter, and his upbringing.
The iconic New Orleaner stated that the Global Impact Award is “not supposed” for someone from his background. When Lil Wayne went on tour as a young adolescent, his mother, whom he affectionately referred to as “Cita,” was so lonely that she begged him for a grandchild to keep company.
Weezy’s emotional remembrance of “I walked into my mama’s room when I was 14” may be seen below. “My dad was killed, so she asked if I wa nt ed a child.” We didn’t realize her son would be gone for six months after erupting and beginning his first tour. When I got home, she told me, “Son, I can’t live in this house alone.” “We need a solution.”
As he concluded his acceptance speech, the “Love Me” rapper thanked Cash Money Records and Young Money head Mack Maine, among other personal and hip-hop celebrities, for their assistance.
“I’d also like to thank Cash Money Records,” Lil Wayne explained. Coming from New Orleans, Cash Money Records was [as if] you were from Dallas and signed with the Cowboys before Universal or any nationwide arrangement.
The Record Academy presented Weezy, Missy Elliot, and Dr. Dre with the Global Impact award on Thursday. Sylvia Rhone, Epic Records’ first female CEO in 2019, received the XXL Awards prize as well.
The Recording Academy selected Lil Wayne as a 2023 Global Impact Award laureate on their website, recognizing his numerous contributions to hip-hop culture.
