Lil Wayne is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, yet, like many other local sports fans, he has little interest in the city’s teams. Lil Wayne has given up his right to play sports in his home state and now supports the Green Bay Packers rather than the New Orleans Saints as his favorite NFL team.
When he appeared on ESPN’s “First Take” on Monday, he explained how he came to be such an avid Packers fan.
This is how he explained how he became a lifelong Cheesehead: Lil Wayne’s father attended the Green Bay Packers’ victory against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI in New Orleans in 1997. Wayne was fourteen years old when he observed his father purchase a large collection of Packers memorabilia for the family.
“The Packers won, pops came home with Packers everything, cups, towels,” that’s what he said.
However, none of those souvenirs were intended to be looked at nostalgically or kept away. Coming from a low-income family, each object was used for practical reasons rather than for its potential artistic value.
He explained, “They are placed with the actual towels.” Every day, you take a bath, using the towels and mugs. “Every day, I had to use a Green Bay Packers towel and cup.”
Lil Wayne, who supposedly showered in nothing but Packers towels, was all in on supporting the Packers when the 1998 edition of “Madden NFL” was out later that year. Brett Favre, the Packers’ quarterback and three-time NFL MVP, was chosen to play the video game, which was enough to defeat the Saints.
“I will always be a Green Bay supporter…” He told Stephen A. Smith of First Take that “there is no comparison [between the Packers and the Saints].”
