It’s a truth universally acknowledged that even the children of global superstars can occasionally feel embarrassed by their parents, as revealed by Jay-Z during a recent interview on CBS Mornings. The legendary rapper shared insights into his relationship with his and Beyoncé’s eldest daughter, 11-year-old Blue Ivy, and how he has to defend his and Bey’s coolness to their tween.
In a teaser clip from the interview, host Gayle King asked, “Do your kids think you’re cool?” Jay-Z responded with a chuckle, “Blue, she be frontin’ on me a little bit. But, I catch her. I catch her in the corner, you know.”
Despite Blue’s occasional fronting, Jay-Z mentioned that she sometimes seeks his fashion advice. “Now, she asks me, ‘Is this cool?’ You know, her sneakers or whatever,” he said, to which King inquired, “She wants your advice?”
“Yeah, she’s come back. But there was a time where she was like, ‘Dad!’” Jay-Z added, mimicking his daughter hiding her face in embarrassment. “I was like, ‘I’m cool! I don’t know what you’re saying. At your house, your parents [are] cool.’”
Blue Ivy, the eldest of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s three children, often shared the spotlight with her mother during Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, which concluded on October 1. Blue joined her mom on stage for energetic dance numbers, showcasing their close bond and her budding performance skills.
Beyoncé paid a heartfelt tribute to her daughter’s performances on Instagram, posting photos and video footage of them dancing together. She captioned the post, “My beautiful first born I’m so proud and thankful to be your mama. You bring us so much joy, my sweet angel.”
The Carters, also parents to six-year-old twins Rumi and Sir, continue to navigate the balance between their public personas and private family life, showing that even the coolest parents have to work to maintain their coolness in their children’s eyes.
